Amy Cook

What was your favorite Marketing class at Auburn?
My favorite Marketing class at Auburn was Personal Selling taught by Dr. Butler. I felt that Dr. Butler was able to combine required teaching material with real life scenarios to help students prepare for situations they would face when leaving Auburn. Some of the assignments forced student to veer out of their comfort zones and I believe we were better off for it.
Is there one thing you could change about your Auburn Marketing Experience?
Yes, I think professors and administrators should better inform students that they need to get their resume together junior year and prepare student to start interviewing at the beginning of their senior year. Students also need to be informed that internship and part-time jobs are a crucial part of finding your first post-college job and a resume without any work experience on it will be quickly overlooked.
Where are you currently living and working?
I live in Atlanta, GA and work a Carters OshKosh B’Gosh.
Could you give us a brief description of your day to day work.
I work in the eCommerce Marketing Department and handle trafficking and keeping account of the daily promotions for both brands. I also, edit the promotions on the site when necessary, analyze the daily numbers and record the success of each promotion and marketing channel, correspond with agencies and affiliates we partner with and various other tasks.
How did you handle the job application process?
I began by getting second opinions on my resume and improving it as much as possible. Then I used the COB Career Center, Career Fairs, and personal connections to meet employers and pass my resume out whenever possible.
Do you have any advice to give Marketing Majors about finding employment?
Be as proactive as possible and find any outlets you can to spread the word that you are looking for a job and have the skills necessary to be an asset to any team. Confidence will go far so practice interviewing and your “elevator speech” as many times as necessary until you have full confidence in what you are saying.
Is there any advice you can give marketing Majors about finding a job within the Marketing World?
Push as hard as you can and try to have informational interviews with people in your field to learn about the industry and a possible place for you in it. Network as much as possible and utilize your Auburn Alums, Sorority/Fraternity Alums, family friends and any other connections you can think of.

Interested in Marketing as well as Supply Chain?

Jay Brigleb talks about his work with Echo Global Logistics

What is your occupation? (Please include Company name, job description, and daily activities)?
Echo Global Logistics working with inside sales and logistics. I sell Echo and our service to new and existing clients, handle truckload and less than truckload shipping for clients, track loads and deal with claims.

How did Auburn prepare you for this position?
I had classes in supply chain and a few on sales. Abernathy's personal selling class was most helpful, I still remember things he said every day that help me out.

How did you attain this position?
My super awesome interviewing skills.  It's a very young company and everyone likes to have fun so I fit right in with the culture and they're expanding every year.

What are some key attributes you think someone pursuing a marketing career should have?
Persistence, thick skinned, genuine

What advice do you have for new graduated students going into the job market?
Start your search now, if you don't mind moving home don't take the first job offer you get if you don't like it, if you do mind moving home then by all means take the job.

What do you think Auburn could have done differently to prepare you?
Honestly, if you are proactive they do a pretty good job.  I think there could have been a seminar or class on what the corporate world and the transition would be like.

What would you have done differently to prepare for the "real world"?
Probably wouldn't have taken the first offer I got and would have moved to Colorado as I had planned.

What is the biggest issue you deal with on a daily basis?
Monotony and boredom!

Alumna Stacy Shockley Uses Her Marketing Degree for a Purpose

Works with Foundation Corporate Gifts for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

What was your favorite Marketing class at Auburn?
A: My favorite Marketing class at Auburn was Marketing on the Internet.

Is there one thing you could change about your Auburn Marketing Experience?
A: The thing I would change about my marketing experience is I wish we had more creative marketing classes. This is the aspect of marketing I am most interested in. I think it's important to learn how to use Adobe Creative Suite and other creative marketing techniques to be successful in the marketing world. Public Relations majors have to learn these programs and I think marketing majors should as well. I know how to use Photoshop and In-Design and during job interviews it set me apart from other candidates.

Where are you currently living and working?
A: I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia and work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the Foundation working specifically in corporate gifts.

Please give us a brief description of your day to day work.
A: No two days are ever the same for me, but these are some of my overall responsibilities. I assist in planning and implementing events involving patients, families, community donors, and Aflac employees to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. I am in charge of the Macy’s Great Tree Lighting event on Thanksgiving night. In charge of coordinating photo shoots, filming, interviews, shopping trips, clinic visits, etc. for two Aflac Cancer Center patients and families. I work directly with community donors and present on behalf of the Aflac Cancer Center at community events. I develop donor relationships through hospital tours. I plan and implement patient artwork for major donors. I assist in planning and executing Hyundai Hope on Wheels event at the hospital as well as coordinate patient participation. Gift processing of over $1.5 million dollars after the 12thAnnual WSB Care-a-Thon. Assisted in planning auction events, conducted Care-a-Thon follow up,and created 2013 Care-a-Thon calendar.

How did you handle the job application process?
A: I started the job process very very early. It takes a lot of time to find a job, submit a resume, interview and decide to take a job. You complete this process multiple times and it can be very stressful and tiring.

Do you have any advice to give Marketing Majors about finding employment?
A: The biggest advice I can give Marketing students is the real/working world is all about who you know. Make as many connections as you can with family, friends. old co-workers, etc. Reach out to any and all connections you have. I think it's the easiest and most successful way of finding a good job. Also if you haven't already make sure you have a TON of marketing experience through internships and other marketing activities. This is what can set you apart from other candidates.

A word for our Alumni: Laura Kneiss

Marketing & Promotions Associate for Louisiana Tech Athletic Department

What was your favorite marketing class at Auburn?
A: My favorite Marketing Class was Marketing Strategy with Dr. Bourdeau. Not because it was an easy class by any means, but the way the class solved problems and worked together helped prepare you for work outside of college.

Is there anything you would change about your Auburn Marketing Experience?
A: The one thing I would change about my Marketing Experience at Auburn is I wish I could have participated in the Athletic Department Marketing and Promotions Internship my junior year and not just my senior year. The experience I gained from that internship was so beneficial to my career. The guidance I received from everyone in the department and the opportunities and responsibilities they gave me helped me grow into the worker I am today.

Where are you currently living and working?
A:I live in Ruston, Louisiana and I work for the Louisiana Tech Athletic Department. My titles are: Marketing and Promotions Associate and Kids Club Coordinator.

Please give us a brief description of your day to day work.
A: I wish I could give a brief description but no day is the ever same. Some days are just 9 to 5 office days and the next day I could have (similar to this past Saturday) a game day production meeting for football at 9 am, then a volleyball game at 11 am, meet my student workers at noon to set up Kids Zone, be in the stadium at 2:30 pm to set up for the team's entrance, and then at kick-off make sure all on-field promotions and halftime presentations go smoothly.

How did you handle the job application process?
A: I started looking for jobs while I was still in school. I looked on NCAA.org/jobs every single day for three months straight. Then in late May I was contacted the same day I applied for the job at LATech. We did a series of phone interviews and then in early June I traveled 8 hours from Auburn to Ruston. I met everyone in the department, toured campus and the athletic facilities, and sat down with the Athletic Director to make sure this job was the right fit for me.

Do you have any advice to give marketing majors about finding employment after college?
A: My advice to all Marketing Majors about finding employment is to start building your resume now. Get as much experience as possible whether it is volunteer work or an internship. Employers, before they look at your grades and organizations, really look at what your work history has been to make sure you are qualified enough for the job. Even though I had three very creditable internships on my resume it was still challenging to find a job.

Is there any advice you can give marketing majors about finding a job within the world of marketing?
A: My advice to Marketing Majors who want to find jobs in the Marketing World (especially college athletics) is to focus on building your network. Every person you meet could benefit you in some way. Don’t be afraid to ask someone if they can be a reference. Start creating a document that has multiple letters of recommendation and examples of past work. Not only did I send in the required documents for the jobs I applied too, I also sent a marketing plan I did for Women’s Tennis as well as three letters of recommendation from past employers. If you work hard, are responsible, respectful, and reliable they can help you achieve your dream job.
